Jesus Christ Superstar Information
Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) is a rock-opera themed musical with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This musical was initiated as a concept album based on rock opera before making its 1971 Broadway debut. Tom O'Horgan directs the musical. It is sung uniquely with little dialogue spoken between the song. The songs included in the musical were secured in the form of a concept album before the final creation and being staged.
The story of Jesus Christ Superstar is based on last week’s Gospels' accounts of Jesus's life. It starts with the arrival preparations of Jesus along with his disciples in Jerusalem, where the end takes place at the crucifixion. The musical enhances the interpersonal along with political complications that were held between Jesus and Judas Iscariot (missing from the Bible).
In the original album of Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), the Jesus related part was sung by Ian Gillan. Murray Head accompanied Gillan as Judas, Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene, Barry Dennen as Pilate, and Michael d'Abo as King Herod. The very first American authorized, rock opera concert took place in front of 13,000 people. This concert was held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's Civic Arena.
Jesus Christ Superstar, as a Broadway debut show, was closed on June 30, 1973, after performing 711 performances in total. This show received a mix of positive and negative remarks and was nominated for five Tony Awards, but unfortunately, couldn’t win any.
Jesus Christ Superstar faced some controversies based upon religious beliefs of various religious groups. It bothered some Jews for showing the majority of Jewish villains that were involved in Jesus’s death. Jesus Christ Superstar was even banned based on being "irreligious." The original concept album of 1970 gained major fame while its release in 1971 hit the top position on the US Billboard Pop Albums. The Australian cast recordings of 1972 and 1992 were also big successes. A film named “Jesus Christ Superstar” was also released in 1973 and became the 8th highest-grossing film of the year.
