Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Information
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra is a North Carolina-based orchestra in the United States. The Charlotte Symphony, the region's largest and most active professional performing arts group, presents over 100 performances each season and employs 100 professional musicians, 62 of whom are on full-time contracts. Over 200,000 people attend CSO performances each year.
The Orchestra was founded in 1932 by Spanish conductor and composer Guillermo S. de Roxlo, who led 15 musicians. From 2001 to 2010, the Orchestra was led by conductor Christof Perick. The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra chose Christopher Warren-Green as its 11th music director in May 2009, with the 2010–2011 season beginning in June.
The Orchestra's primary venue is the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center's Belk Theater, which seats 1,970 people. The Charlotte Master Chorale is the Orchestra's official chorus. Opera Carolina and Charlotte Ballet both use the Symphony as their house orchestra. The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra's Summer Pops concerts are held at the Symphony Park amphitheater in South Park.
The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra issued its first compact recording in 2007, featuring Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, and Mozart symphonic masterworks directed by Christof Perick. At its "Celebrate America" concert at Charlotte's Symphony Park in July 2009, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra started a bridge fund campaign to raise $5.6 million to fill predicted budget deficits over six years.
