Don McLean Information

Donald McLean III (October 2, 1945) is an American singer and songwriter best known for his hit song entitled “American Pie” from 1971. Born in New Rochelle, New York, his early musical influences included Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra. As a teenager, McLean gained an interest in folk music and, in particular, the Weavers’ 1955 recording, At Carnegie Hall.

McLean left Villanova University after several months. He connected with a famed folk music agent, Harold Leventhal, and stayed with him for several months. For the next several years, McLean performed at events and venues such as Troubadour in Los Angeles, the Cellar Door in Washington, D.C, the Newport Folk Festival, The Bitter End, and The Gaslight Café in New York.

Throughout his career, McLead released many projects on different record labels. A few of them are United Artists Records, EMI Records, Curb Records, and Capitol Records. His major studio albums include Don McLean (1972), Homeless Brother (1974), Prime Time (1977), Chain Lightning (1978), Love Tracks (1987), and Addicted to Black (2009).
