Engelbert Humperdinck Information
Arnold George Dorsey (May 2, 1936) is an English pop singer. He was born in Madras, British Raj. He began his career as a performer in the late 1950s under Gerry Dorsey. In 1965, he partnered with manager Gordon Mills and changed his identity to that of German composer Engelbert Humperdinck. In 1967, his renditions of "Release Me" and "The Last Waltz" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and sold over a million copies.
After the triumph of "There Goes My Everything" in 1967, "Am I That Easy to Forget" in 1968, and "A Man Without Love" in 1969, Humperdinck continued to have a string of top-ten singles (1968). This garnered him a large support base, with many of his followers taking the moniker "Humperdincker" for themselves. In the 1960s, three of his songs were among the best-selling in the UK. Both "After the Lovin'" (1976) and "This Moment in Time" (1979) were top ten hits for Humperdinck in North America during the 1970s.
His recordings of "Lesbian Seagull," featured on the soundtrack of Beavis and Butthead Do America (1996), and a dance album brought him renewed recognition during the 1990s lounge revival after he had already established himself as a prolific concert performer (1998). The singer released several albums in the new century, including the gospel album Always Hear The Harmony: The Gospel Sessions (2003), nominated for a Grammy, and a double album of duets, Engelbert Calling (2014).
