Gerald Maxwell Rivera (May 23, 1973) is an American singer, record producer, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. He is known simply as Maxwell on stage and was born in Brooklyn, New York. The 17-year-old Brooklynite started making music on a cheap Casio keyboard he got as a gift.
Maxwell's quick ascension from the New York City club scene of the early 1990s to the mainstream had been influenced by the urban R&B of the early 1980s. After securing access to a 24-track studio, Maxwell began recording songs for a demo tape, which he shared with his acquaintances.
His official debut musical performance at Manhattan's Nell's gathered a crowd thanks to the buzz generated by the demo. Maxwell spent the following two years writing and recording more than three hundred songs and was a regular at NYC's smaller clubs.
Maxwell's debut album, Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, was recorded in the mid-1990s with the help of lyricist Leon Ware and acclaimed guitarist Wah Wah Watson. The album was recorded in several New York City studios, including Electric Lady, RPM, Sorcerer, and Chung King, as well as in Chicago at CRC.
