Toby Keith Information
Toby Keith (July 8, 1961) is an American songwriter, actor, country singer, and record producer. He is from Clinton, Oklahoma, and graduated from Moore High School. After his graduation, Keith started working in the oil fields soon becaming an operation manager.
Keith was just 20 years old when some of his friends, including Keith Cory, Scott Webb, Danny Smith, and David “Yogi” Vowell, formed the East Money Band. He started to perform with the band, still working in the oil fields. The East Money Band used to perform at the local bars. He went unemployed when the oil industry started declining rapidly in 1982.
Keith went to Nashville, Tennessee, in the early 1990s, where he busked at a local place called Houndogs and on Music Row. He returned home, discouraged because no label was ready to sign him. Keith made himself a promise that he will leave his music career if he could not get a recording contract by the age of 30. One of his fans gave a copy of his demo tape to Harold Shedd (Mercury Records’ executive) that he used to distribute when he busked in Nashville. Shedd liked it and went on to see Keith perform live, which changed Keith’s life, as he gained a recording contract.
Keith released his debut single “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” which went no.1 on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1993. The single also hit no. 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. Some of his other singles that topped the charts are “I’m Just Talkin’ About Tonight,” “My List,” “Who’s Your Daddy,” “I Love This Bar,” “American Soldier,” and “Whisky Girl."
Keith’s released his debut studio album “Toby Keith” in 1993 and kept throwing many others such as Boomtown (1994), Blue Moon (1996), Unleashed (2002), White Trash with Money (2006), That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy (2008), and a few others.
Keith has won several awards since his first release. Some of his top awards include the American Music Awards where he won different category awards such as Favorite Country Album (2002) for his album “Unleashed,” Favorite Country Album (2003) for his album “Shock’n Y’all,” and Favorite Country Male Artist (both in 2003 and 2005).
