Bellator MMA Information
Bellator Fighting Championships, now known as the Bellator MMA, is a mixed martial arts promotion based in Santa Monica, California. It is a subsidiary and of Viacom, and is one of the most prominent Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) promotions in the world. The word ‘Bellator’ means ‘warrior’ in Latin.
It was founded by Bjorn Rebney in 2008. During his stewardship of the promotion, Bellator MMA feature ‘The Toughest Tournament in Sports.’ A single-elimination march with the winner being the one who defeats each eight-person or four-person tournament. The winner took home a check of $100,000 in addition to a guaranteed world-title fight against the current Bellator world champion in the given weight class.
Scott Coker then took over as the President of Bellator MMA from Rebney, and the promotion seized the tournament format of fights in favor of multiple one-on-one. Then in December 2011, Viacom bought a majority stake in the Bjorn Rebney founded it, and in January 2013, all Bellator events started airing on Spike.
Bellator MMA features some of the best echelon athletes in combat sports. The first MMA fight the promotion held was in June 2009, which had 222 ‘numbered’ events. Some of the notable athletes under the Bellator MMA promotion include Douglas Lima, Rory MacDonald, Michael Chandler, Gegard Mousasi, Lyoto Machida, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Paul Daley, lima-Lei Macfarlane, and Cris Cyborg.
