Big East Mens Basketball Tournament Information
The Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament is the men’s basketball tournament of the Big East Conference, where ten teams participate the Big East. It is also a single-elimination tournament that currently takes place in Madison Square Garden, Midtown Manhattan, and NYC. The competition was first played in 1980 and is perhaps the longest-running conference tournament in all college basketball at any one site. The tournament winner receives the conference’s automatic bid, which leads to the big NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship.
Some of the notable past host stadiums for the Big East include Providence Civic Center (1980), Carrier Dome (1981), and Hartford Civic Center (1982). Providence, Rhode Island (1980), and Syracuse, New York (1981) are a few former host locations. Most championships have been earned by Connecticut Huskies and Georgetown Hoyas (7).
The 2009 tournament featured six-overtime games between Connecticut and Syracuse, resulting in a Syracuse win, 127–117. The game was the second-longest in NCAA history, ending nearly four hours after the start time.
In 2011, Connecticut became the only team to win five games in five consecutive days to win the championship in the Big East Tournament. In 2021, in four days, Georgetown won four games as an underdog, winning its eighth title.
Louisville’s Peyton Siva (2012–2013), Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing (1984–1985), and Villanova’s Josh Hart (2015, 2017) are the only three players who have earned multiple MVP honors. As a part of the current deal, the original Big East has split into the American Athletic Conference and the “new” Big East. The second part retains the rights to the conference tournament. From 2014 the first tournament held after forming the new Big East through 2019, all ten member schools took part in the tournament. In 2021, after the Big East expanded to 11 teams, the Big East Tournament adjusted to an 11-team format.
