The Colorado Avalanche (NHL) is a professional ice hockey team that is based in Denver, Colorado. Ball Arena which is a multi-purpose arena also based in Denver, is their home arena. They are the only team that is located in the Mountain Time Zone.
The team was founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques. Colorado Avalanche was one of the charter franchises of the World Hockey Association. As a result of the NHL-WHA merger, the franchise joined the NHL in 1979. Following the season of 1994-1995, the franchise relocated to Denver after being sold to COMSAT Entertainment Group.
The uniform theme for the Colorado Avalanche is white, steel blue, black, silver, and burgundy. On October 6, 1995, the Avalanche played their first game. The game was against Detroit Red Wings. Colorado won the Pacific Division again in 1996-97 as well as the Presidents’ Trophy for finishing the regular season.
