Empire Classic Information
The Empire Classic, originally known as the 2K Sports Classic, is a college basketball tournament that takes place every year in early November and is broadcast on ESPN to kick off the new basketball season. It was initially held in 1995 under the name Atlantic City Shootout and was organized by Gazelle Group, Inc. To generate money for cancer research, the National Association of Basketball Coaches teamed up with the American Cancer Society the next year, and the event was renamed the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.
After 2012, when proceeds started going to the Wounded Warrior Project, the tournament was no longer known as the 2K Sports Classic. From 2012 to 2014, the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, hosted the Coach's annual college basketball tournament—the Cancer Classic to raise money for cancer research. The "Empire Classic" was rebranded as the "2K Empire Classic Benefiting Wounded Warrior Project" for 2019. On November 22, 2022, at Barclays Center, St. John's defeated Syracuse 76-69 in overtime to claim victory in the 2022 Empire Classic.
