The Florida Gators represent Florida University in the American Football sport. The Gators compete for Florida University in the Football Bowl and Eastern Division. The Florida Gators play home games at the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on the Gainesville University campus. This stadium has a seating capacity of up to 88548 people. The present head coach of the Gators is Billy Napier. The team's first game was played in the year 1906. As of 2019, the Florida Gators have been a member of the Southeastern Conference since 1933. The Florida Gators were affiliated with The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the Southern Conference.
The official uniform theme of the Gators is orange and blue. "The Orange and Blue" is the team's fight song, whereas Albert and Alberta is the official mascot. The marching band of the team is Pride of the Sunshine.
Since 1990, Gators teams have finished the season scoring in the top 10 fifteen times, won three national championships (in 1996 and 2008 under Spurrier and Urban Meyer, respectively), fifteen SEC East division titles, eight conference titles, and sixteen bowl games. The Heisman Trophy was awarded to Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Tim Tebow (2007) quarterbacks.
The Florida Gators have been named national champions five times by NCAA-designated major selectors. From 1992 to 2023, Florida was in the East Division of the SEC. Each year, they played each team in their division and a few teams from the West Division. 2024 the SEC will expand to 16 teams and eliminate its two divisions. This will change how the Gators schedule games against the other teams in the league. While the conference is still debating a new model for the future, they have only published the 2024 calendar as of June 14, 2023.
