Idaho Steelheads Information
The Idaho Steelheads are a prominent member of the ECHL, an American professional minor league ice hockey team. Steelheads are based in Boise, Idaho. The team plays in the Mountain Division of the Western Conference in the ECHL. They have been playing since the 2016–17 season. In 1996, it was announced that the Steelheads would be the 1997–98 expansion team by Diamond Sports Management. The team at that time was headed by Cord Pereira, playing as a member of WCHL, the West Coast Hockey League.
In 2003, the Steelheads joined the ECHL and the rest of the WCHL. As of 2021, the team is now declared the westernmost ECHL team. Since the 2005–06 season and during the 2003–04 season, the Steelheads have been enjoying an affiliation program with the Dallas Stars in the National Hockey League. Since the 2009–10 season, the Austin-based Texas Stars have been an AHL affiliate by Idaho. The team plays home games at the Idaho Central Arena in downtown Boise. It is a 5002 seated arena.
In 2007, the Steelheads hosted the ECHL All-Star Game in Boise. The most notable rival of the team is the Utah Grizzlies because of the proximity. Some past rivals include the old WCHL's refugees, such as the Fresno Falcons, Alaska Aces, and Bakersfield Condors.
