Kentucky Derby Information
Kentucky Derby is an American horse race event held annually in Louisville, Kentucky. It is typically held on the first Saturday in May and caps the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival. The race was inaugurated in 1875. The Kentucky Race is also nicknamed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.” The race is also the first leg of the American Triple Crown.
The first radio broadcast of the Kentucky Derby was aired on WGN and WHAS in Chicago on May 16, 1925. The first television coverage was provided on May 7, 1947. Diane Crump became the first-ever female jockey to ride in the Derby in 1970.
Since 2002, Norman Adams has been the designer of the Kentucky Derby Logo. The corporate sponsorship deal was offered by the Louisville-based fast-food company, Yum! Brands, on February 1, 2006. Woodford Reserve replaced Yum Brands as the presenting sponsor in 2018. Some of the jockeys who have won the horse race so far include John Velazquez (2020), Falvien Prat (2019), Mike E. Smith (2018), Mario Gutierrez (2016), Victor Espinoza (2015), Joel Rosario (2013), and Calvin Borel (2010).
