The Los Angeles Lakers, formerly known as the Minneapolis Lakers, are an American basketball team in Los Angeles. They are a member of the NBA’s Western Conference in the Pacific Division. Currently, they play their home games at a 21,000-seat multi-purpose arena named Staples Center. The franchise was founded in 1947 as Minneapolis Lakers. It is considered one of the most successful teams in the NBA’s history and has won 16 NBA championships since its formation.
In their first season, the Los Angeles Lakers had a record of 43–17 and won the NBL Championship. They have sold out 33 consecutive games during the 1971-72 season, which is considered the longest winning streak in NBA history. In the 1972–73 NBA season, they won 60 games and took the Pacific Division title. The team won five championships in the 1980s. That’s why the 1980s Lakers were nicknamed "Showtime."
The team's uniform color theme is based on purple, gold, and black. The Lakers have 34 Hall of Famers, including one assistant coach, 26 players, three contributors, and four head coaches. Some well-known Hall of Famers who contributed to the organization are George Mikan, Clyde Lovellette, Magic Johnson, Dennis Rodman, Spencer Haywood, and Chick Hearn.
The team has appeared 15 times in the NBA finals, including eight NBA Finals appearances in the 1980s. The franchise has won 16 National Basketball Association (NBA) and the Basketball Association of America (BAA) titles. Four Lakers, Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar, Bryant, and O'Neal, have won the NBA MVP Award for a total of eight awards.
