PRCA Rodeo Information
The PRCA is the world's largest rodeo organization. A group of cowboys went on strike at a rodeo at Boston Garden in 1936; W.T. Johnson, who refused to include the cowboys' registration fees, created the organization was born. Johnson eventually caved into the cowboys' demands, and the Cowboys' Turtle Association was formed.
While they were reluctant to organize, they were not hesitant to put out their necks to acquire what they needed, much like turtles might. Alice Greenough Orr, a four-time national bronc champion, was one of the organizers. The Turtles' name was changed to the Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1945 and then to the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1975.
The PRCA employs roughly 70 full-time personnel, but during rodeo season, that number rises to about 100. The ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy is in Colorado Springs, opened in 1979. In 2006, the PRCA was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame.
At the end of each year, the National Finals Rodeo and the National Finals Steer Roping recognize their winners and awards, detailed in a separate article.
