About Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a biennial competition between European and American men's golf teams. Every two years, the competition is held on a course in the United States or Europe. Samuel Ryder, an English merchant, gave the trophy used for the Ryder Cup its current name. The Ryder Cup Europe and the PGA of America oversee the tournament together. Ryder Cup Europe is a partnership between the PGA European Tour (60%) and the PGAs of Great Britain and Ireland (20%) and Europe. From September 24th to the 26th, 2021, the Ryder Cup was played at Whistling Straits' Straits course in Haven, Wisconsin. By beating Europe 19-9, the United States achieved its highest victory margin in the event's contemporary history (since the addition of Continental Europe in 1979). Before 1999, the Ryder Cup was played in odd-numbered years; however, when the 2001 event was postponed in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, it was shifted to even-numbered years, beginning in 2002. After being postponed in 2020 because of the pandemic, it returned to being held on odd years in 2021. This means that starting in 2021, the Ryder Cup again took place in odd-numbered years, as it did before 1999. This meant that the Presidents Cup and the Solheim Cup would again be held in even-numbered years, beginning in 2022 and 2024.
