Musical Tina: The Tina Turner Musical features the famous songs of Tina Turner and shows the story of her rise to fame from her modest origins in Nutbush, Tennessee. With a book by Katori Hall, Frank Ketelaar, and Kees Prins, along with direction by Phyllida Lloyd, the musical debuted on April 17, 2018. The debut took place at London's Aldwych Theatre. On November 7, 2019, the show premiered on Broadway.
Stage Entertainment has been working on a biographical musical based on the life of Tina Turner for almost a year. On December 16, 2016, they performed a workshop presentation at which Tina Turner participated. The musical's creative team includes composer Katori Hall, book writers Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, director Phyllida Lloyd, stage and costume designers Mark Thompson and Anthony van Laast, and musical supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck. Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins wrote the initial draft of the book, and Katori Hall took up writing duties later on.
Previews at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre began on October 12, 2019, with the formal opening night set for November 7, 2019. In the Broadway revival, Warren again played the lead role, with Phyllida Lloyd directing and Anthony van Laast doing the choreography. Due to the pandemic, performances ceased on March 12, 2020, and peaked on October 8, 2021. After 27 previews and 482 regular performances, it was announced in June 2022 that the show would end on August 14, 2022.
