Queen Elizabeth Theatre is located at Hamilton Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The venue is named for its most famous patron, Queen Elizabeth II. It is the city’s largest theatre complex and serves home to Vancouver Opera and a variety of different musical performances. It has a seating capacity of 2,929 people at a time. The theatre was first opened to the general public in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II herself on July 5, 1959, commencing with a concert by The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. It also features a locally curated art gallery exhibiting work by emerging artists.
Queen Elizabeth Theatre is under the ownership of the City of Vancouver. It is one of the four facilities that are operated by Vancouver Civic theatres on behalf of the city of Vancouver. Its rich architecture was designed by Arcop (Architects in co-partnership). Since 1996, Vancouver Civic Theatre has been committed to a long-range strategy for the restoration and renovation to enhance the theatre’s production capabilities, acoustic performances, audience comfort, and life safety features.
The theater serves home to over 100 shows annually from all genres of entertainment including films, concerts, theatre, family shows, film festivals, annual film series, comedy shows, live acts, stage shows, dance performances, and much more. Notable events include World Premier of Bruce Ruddle’s rock Opera ‘beyond Eden,’ John Adams Opera ‘Nixon in China,’ Alberta Ballet’s ‘The Fiddle and the Drum’ and many more. Famous musicians who have performed here include John Arden, Barenaked Ladies, Blue Rodeo, Michael Buble, Celine Dion, K.D Lang, and many others.
