The Playhouse Square State Theater is one of the many famous theaters in Cleveland, Ohio. Located at Euclid Avenue in downtown, this theater is owned by Playhouse Square Center. It was opened for the public on February 5, 1921, and was further rebuilt in the year 1984 with a seating capacity of 3,193. Thomas W. Lamb designed the architecture of the venue. The theatre serves home to the Cleveland Ballet and Cleveland Opera since 1984. The theatre was renamed as KeyBank State Theater in 2017.
The KeyBank State Theatre has the world’s longest lobby, which contains four murals by American modernist James Daugherty. The State Theatre was opened as a movie/vaudeville house, and it attracted several legendary performers, including Abbott & Costello, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Jack Benny, and The Max Brothers. The venue has also presented musical extravaganzas such as The Lion King of Disney and Phantom of the Opera. In 1972 and 1977, the Ohio and State theatres were threatened to be demolished for the building purpose of a parking lot, but fortunately, they were saved through public outcry. The musical revue ‘Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris’ opened in the theatre’s lobby in 1973. In the year 1978, the State theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of Playhouse Square.
