The Lincoln Theatre is located at 1215 U St NW, Washington, D.C. This site is on Washington's Black Broadway with a seating capacity of 1,225. The venue was opened to the general public on January 22, 1922, while it underwent renovation in the year 1989-1993. The theater is under the ownership of the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities and operated by the I.M.P. The architecture of the arena is designed in Classical Revival styles by Reginald W. Geare along with Harry Crandall. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 27, 1993. The Lincoln Theatre comprises of a movie house and ballroom. It was shut down after the 1968 race-related riots but got restored and reopened in 1994.
Performers that performed at Lincoln Theatre include Duke Ellington, Pearl Bailey, Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan. It featured All-Night Movie" shows on the weekend. The theater also hosted a play known as Where Eagles Fly along with theatrical, political events, Jazz performances, and musical shows. Lincoln Theatre has also been a venue for Filmfest DC. Some celebrities that performed here include Chris Cornell, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Janelle Monáe, Peter Frampton, Lucinda Williams, and big band performer like Duke Ellington.
