Merriweather Post Pavilion is an outdoor concert venue which is located in Columbia, Howard County, Maryland, USA. The Merriwether Post Pavillion is located within driving distance of Washington DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis. This gives the venue a great radius of potential event seekers to enjoy its mostly summer concerts. The amphitheater has a seating capacity of 19,319. It is under the ownership of the Downtown Columbia Arts and Culture Commission while operated by I.M.P. LLC. It is an amphitheater type that was opened to the general public in the year 1967.
The pavilion underwent renovation in the years 2015, 2016, and 2018. Gehry, Walsh, & O'Malley designed the architecture of the venue. The Merriweather Post Pavilion has been stated as the second-best amphitheater in the USA by Billboard magazine in the year 2010. It is also honored by the title of the fourth-best amphitheater in the United States by Rolling Stone in 2013. Again in 2016, it was ranked 29th (out of 100) by Consequence of Sound among all the music venues in the USA. The amphitheater is named after the American Post Foods heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.
The great opening ceremony of the venue was attended by Vice President Hubert Humphrey on July 14, 1967. George Wallace also held a rally in 1968. The amphitheater also hosted popular music concerts, including the performances by The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and The Who. Jimmy Buffett performed at Merriweather for the first time in 1977.
From 2009 to 2013 Virgin Mobile's FreeFest was hosted at Merriweather Post Pavilion for five years. Some popular culture events include recording 3 tracks of Jackson Browne's Running on Empty, 2 tracks from a remastered edition of Men at Work's Cargo, and it is expected on September 7, 2019, that O.A.R. will record its seventh live album at the pavilion.
