The Balboa Theatre is located at 868 Fourth Avenue, San Diego, California, United States. It is a historic movie theatre in downtown that was built in 1924. It underwent renovation in the early months of 2005 and reopened in 2008 as a performing arts center. The theatre is under the ownership of the city of San Diego with a capacity of 1339 seats. The architect of this theatre was done by William H.Wheeler in 1924. It is grand vaudeville which is a mixture of Spanish and Moorish Revival styles. The theatre was built by the famous businessman, Robert E. Hicks. During theWorld War II, office space of the Balboa Theatre was transformed into the housing of the U.S. Navy. The theatre features a second level loge and a Main Floor Orchestra along with a balcony sections.
Currently, the Balboa Theatre hosts The Mainly Mozart Festival, touring companies of Broadway productions, and some special events. The annual “State of the City” address is held by the city of San Diego at the theatre.
