The National Theatre is located at 1321 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington D.C. The National Theatre was opened on December 7, 1835, with a seating capacity of around 1,705 people at a time. The theatre is owned by Quadrangle Development Corporation and operated by Jam Theatricals (a private non-profit organization). It serves home to the National Theatre Corporation.
The theatre has entertained every U.S. President since inauguration. Andrew Jackson. Ted Lincoln had attended the performance of the Wonderful Lamp and Aladdin at Grover's Theatre on April 14, 1865, when his father President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre. The theatre went under renovations in the year 1982-1983. Some Broadway productions that took place at the theatre are Crazy For You, Dolly!, Hello, West Side Story, Show Boat, Amadeus, If/Then. Some popular big names who have performed at the arena are Edwin Booth, Jessica Tandy, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Hume Cronyn, Pearl Bailey, Tim Curry, Valerie Harper, Marlo Thomas, Rex Harrison, Sting, Kevin Spacey, Will Rogers, Mary Martin, Alfred Lunt, Robert Redford, Rip Torn, Norma Terris, Helen Morgan, and Julie Harris. The venue also hosted the Washington premiere of the British film The Red Shoes. Walt Disney's Fantasia played at the theatre for seven weeks, even as a prestige attraction in 1941. The arena hosts hundreds of shows and events every year.
