The Des Moines Civic Center is located at 221 Walnut Street, Des Moines, Iowa, USA. It is a performing arts center with a seating capacity of 2,744 people at a time. The theatre has been enjoying the largest theatre position since its inauguration on June 10, 1979. The venue is used for concerts, ballets, Broadway shows, etc. The theater is under the ownership of the Des Moines performing arts and is operated by the owner. Charles Hebert and Associates designed the architecture of the building. The center is famous for its acoustics and handicapped accessibility. There are ten dressing rooms backstage, two lobbies, glass walls, and skywalks.
The Civic Center is home to Stoner Theatre (200-seat) which is also used for theatrical shows along with lectures that are located at the street level. The center building also includes the Cowles Commons and the nearby Temple of Performing Arts. The first public performance that was held at the venue was the Des Moines Ballet on June 14. There were 100,000 visitors recorded at the production of The Phantom of the Opera in 1997.
