The Paramount Theatre is located at 2025 Broadway, Oakland, California. It is a multi-purpose arena with a seating capacity of 3,040 people at a time. It was known as the largest theatre on the West Coast when it was built. The venue was opened to the general public on December 16, 1931, with a construction cost of $3 million while it underwent renovation in the year 1973. It is an indoor theater that is under the ownership of the city of Oakland.
The theatre is currently home to the Oakland Ballet and the Oakland East Bay Symphony. Timothy Pflueger designed the architecture of the venue in an Art Deco style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 14, 1973. It was also declared as a California Registered Historic Landmark in 1976 along with a U.S. National Historic Landmark in 1977.
The inauguration ceremony of the arena was accompanied by the opening film, The False Madonna. The premiere was attended by Kay Francis, California's governor James Rolph, and Oakland mayor Fred N. Morcom. The venue also hosted some best of the pictures such as Dancing Lady, The Robe, Let It Be, The Beatles, etc. The theatre was also used as one of a location in the movie The Candidate. At present, the Paramount Theatre plays host to plays, stand-up comedy, lecture series, special events, R&B, jazz, blues, pop, rock, gospel, classical music, and screenings of classic movies from Hollywood's Golden Era.
