About St Louis Symphony

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is a symphony orchestra founded in 1880 by Joseph Otten. The symphony orchestra was formed as the St. Louis Choral Society, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO), and it is based in St. Louis, Missouri. It is the second-oldest professional symphony orchestra in the nation that is preceded only by the New York Philharmonic. The principal concert venue of The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is Powell Hall, located in midtown St. Louis. The current principal conductor of the symphony orchestra is Stéphane Denève. The SLSO previously performed at the Kiel Opera House before moving to its current home in Powell Hall. It has regularly delivered concerts at Carnegie Hall and has made overseas tours to Europe as well as Japan. The Symphony has recorded for the Red Seal, Telarc, Vox/Turnabout, Columbia, RCA Victor, Angel EMI, and Nonesuch labels. The symphony has also issued CD recordings on its label, Arch Media. The Symphony houses two choral ensembles; one is the IN UNISON Chorus, and the other is the St. Louis Symphony Chorus. The symphony orchestra also features the Holiday Festival Chorus. It consists of high-school-aged singers from the St. Louis region who perform at holiday concerts each season. The SLSO has received nine Grammy Awards in its 140-years history and 60 nominations from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The symphony has been the resident orchestra since 1978 for the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis.

Essential Event-Day Checklist

Before You Leave

  • Digital Tickets: Download tickets to your phone's wallet now. Venue Wi-Fi is notoriously unreliable.
  • ID Check: Bring a valid photo ID; many venues require it for entry or "Will Call" pickup.
  • Bag Policy: Most venues enforce clear bag policies or limits (typically A4 size or smaller). Check the specific venue site to avoid being turned away.
  • Cash & Cards: While many venues are now cashless, bring some cash as a backup.

Pro-Tips

  • Power Up: Bring a portable power bank. Using your phone for video and ride-sharing will drain your battery fast.
  • Hearing Safety: Use high-fidelity earplugs to enjoy the event while protecting your hearing.
  • Hydration & Energy: Eat a full meal and stay hydrated beforehand.

Dress for Success

  • Footwear: Wear broken-in sneakers or boots. You could be standing for 3–5 hours; avoid new shoes.
  • Layer Up: Wear light layers (flannel or light jacket). Venues can range from chilly to very hot.
  • Style: Be yourself, but it always helps to have pockets or a small crossbody bag to keep essentials secure and hands-free.

Logistics & Safety

  • Arrive Early: Get there 60 minutes before doors to beat the merch and security lines.
  • Transport: Pre-book your ride share or scout parking garages in advance to avoid post-show surges.
  • Stay Safe: Identify your nearest exit upon arrival and designate a meeting spot for your group.
