About Clannad

Clannad is one of the Irish family bands that was founded in the year 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal. It was formed by siblings Pól Brennan, Ciarán Brennan, along with their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. The group was initially famous as Clann as Dobhar, which was later shortened to its current name. The band consists of the same members who founded it but experienced the arrival and departure of Pádraig Duggan and Enya Brennan. The music style of Clannad is described as a mixture of rock, folk, traditional Irish, and new age. The incorporation of smooth jazz and Gregorian chant is also felt in their music. Clannad performed for the first time in the annual Letterkenny Folk Festival. Their debut album was a self-titled one, which was recorded at Eamonn Andrews Studios and released in 1973. This album included a cover of "Morning Dew" by Bonnie Dobson. At the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland, the band participated with an "An Pháirc" entry. Clannad 2 was the second studio album by the group in 1974 which was followed by Dúlamán (1976), Crann Úll (1980), Magical Ring (1983), Legend (1984), Atlantic Realm (1989), The Angel and the Soldier Boy (1989), Nádúr (2013), and many more. The four Live Albums released by Clannad are Clannad in Concert (1979), Clannad: Live in Concert (2005), Clannad: Christ Church Cathedral (2012), and Turas 1980 (2018). The band also appeared on RTÉ's The Late Late Show performing the "Theme from Harry's Game" on January 21, 2011. A Lifetime farewell tour is announced by Clannad that is expected to last for a year. Clannad has won six awards throughout its career including 1982 Ivor Novello Awards for Best Soundtrack, 1984 BAFTA Awards for Best Television Music, 1992 Billboard Music Award for World Music Song of the Year, 1999 Grammy Awards for Best New Age Album, 2007 Meteor Music Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award, and finally 2014 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award.

Essential Event-Day Checklist

Before You Leave

  • Digital Tickets: Download tickets to your phone's wallet now. Venue Wi-Fi is notoriously unreliable.
  • ID Check: Bring a valid photo ID; many venues require it for entry or "Will Call" pickup.
  • Bag Policy: Most venues enforce clear bag policies or limits (typically A4 size or smaller). Check the specific venue site to avoid being turned away.
  • Cash & Cards: While many venues are now cashless, bring some cash as a backup.

Pro-Tips

  • Power Up: Bring a portable power bank. Using your phone for video and ride-sharing will drain your battery fast.
  • Hearing Safety: Use high-fidelity earplugs to enjoy the event while protecting your hearing.
  • Hydration & Energy: Eat a full meal and stay hydrated beforehand.

Dress for Success

  • Footwear: Wear broken-in sneakers or boots. You could be standing for 3–5 hours; avoid new shoes.
  • Layer Up: Wear light layers (flannel or light jacket). Venues can range from chilly to very hot.
  • Style: Be yourself, but it always helps to have pockets or a small crossbody bag to keep essentials secure and hands-free.

Logistics & Safety

  • Arrive Early: Get there 60 minutes before doors to beat the merch and security lines.
  • Transport: Pre-book your ride share or scout parking garages in advance to avoid post-show surges.
  • Stay Safe: Identify your nearest exit upon arrival and designate a meeting spot for your group.
