Janelle Monae (December 1, 1985) is an American actress, singer, and rapper. She was born in Kansas City, Kansas. In 2003, Monáe released a demo CD titled The Audition, which marked the beginning of her professional music career. With her concept EP Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase) released in 2007, Monáe made her official debut. In 2010, Monáe released her debut full-length studio album, The ArchAndroid, through Bad Boy Records. It was a concept album and the sequel to her previous EP, and it peaked at number two on the US Top Heatseekers chart.
The RIAA certified Diamond single "We Are Young" by fun., featuring Monáe as a guest vocalist, topped the charts in more than ten nations and introduced Monáe to a new audience. The Electric Lady (2013), Monáe's second studio album, was released at number five on the Billboard 200 and featured tracks four and five of the seven-part Metropolis concept series.
Dirty Computer, Monáe's third studio album, was likewise a concept album, and its 2018 release was met with universal praise. It was named the best album of the year by multiple magazines, and it won Monáe two Grammy Award nominations, including Album of the Year. The accompanying science fiction film shared its name. Monáe's Dirty Computer Tour supported the album, reaching the top ten on the Billboard 200.
