Patrick Bruce Metheny (August 12, 1954) is an American jazz guitarist and composer born in Lee's Summit, Missouri. Methany led the Pat Metheny Group from 1977 until 2010. He is now active in several smaller ensembles, duos, and solo endeavors. His sound combines jazz fusion, Latin jazz, and progressive and current jazz. In 1974, he recorded alongside Paul Bley on piano, Jaco Pastorius on bass, and Bruce Ditmas on drums for Carol Goss's Improvising Artists label on an album unofficially named Jaco. The next year, he worked with guitarist Mick Goodrick in Gary Burton's band. Bright Size Life (ECM, 1976) featured Jaco Pastorius and Bob Moses alongside Metheny on bass and drums and was Metheny's first studio album. Along with drummer Antonio Sánchez, bassist Ben Williams, and saxophonist Chris Potter, he established the Unity Band in 2012. This group spent the second part of the year on the road throughout Europe and the US. In 2013, Metheny announced the launch of the Pat Metheny Unity Group, including the Italian multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi, to expand the Unity Band initiative. As evidence of his skill and the widespread recognition his music has gained, Metheny has been honored with many Grammy Awards. He is well-known for the distinctive textures he has brought to his works through instruments such as the twelve-string guitar and the guitar synthesizer. Metheny has released several successful albums, including "Bright Size Life," "As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls," "Offramp," "The Way Up," and "Secret Story." His works frequently combine acoustic and electronic instruments to create complicated harmonies and melodies.
