Pretty Lights Information
Derek Vincent Smith (November 25, 1981) is an American electronic music producer. He is professionally known by his stage name, Pretty Lights. He was born in Fort Collins, Colorado. In the eighth grade, Smith and Michal Menert both took up skateboarding. After Smith brought a bass guitar to a skate session, he and Menert, a drummer they knew, started making music. Paul Brandt, aka Paul Basic, replaced the band's original drummer.
From 2012 to 2015, Smith also hosted the annual two-night party, BassLights; on the weekend between Christmas and New Year's, Smith and his crew teamed up with Bassnectar to host the annual event at the Hampton Coliseum. In 2012, the duo performed alongside notable opening acts like Big Gigantic, Gramatik, GRiZ, and A-Trak. Big Gigantic, Pretty Lights Music patriarch Michal Menert, Datsik (musician), and Keys N Krates appeared in 2013.
Smith spent some time reflecting in 2018 following his 10th-anniversary gigs at the Red Rocks Amphitheater. After taking off nearly five years, on April 4, 2023, he announced a comeback tour under the moniker "The Soundship Spacesystem Tour," including appearances in 27+ cities. Smith typically describes his work as "Electro Hip-Hop Soul". It is a style combining electronic instrumentation with hip-hop and soul rhythms.
