San Francisco Symphony Information
The San Francisco Symphony (SFS) is an orchestra based in San Francisco, California, founded in 1911. The orchestra has been resident at the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, since 1980, which is located in the City's Hayes Valley neighborhood. SFS, along with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus (1972), are two major parts of the organization. Michael Tilson Thomas has been the orchestra's music director since 1995, although he is scheduled to conclude his tenure in 2020. ESA-Pekka Salonen is scheduled to be the next music director of the SFS.
Conductor-composer Henry Hadley led the first concerts of the SFS. In the beginning, there were 60 musicians in the orchestra. The SFS was the first orchestra that featured symphonic radio broadcasts in 1926; it was even heard in syndicated radio broadcasts on over 300 radio stations in 2003.
The San Francisco Symphony makes regular tours of the United States, Asia, and Europe. The orchestra also went on a Japanese tour, which was led by Josef Krips in 1968. East Coast tour was the recent highly successful tour by the SFS that took place in April 2016. It included performances in Carnegie Hall, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, and The Kennedy Center. The orchestra launched Keeping Score – MTT on Music in 2006, a series of projects comprising audio-visual performances for DVD and broadcast on multimedia websites, PBS's Great Performances, and educational programs.
Some of the several soloists who have appeared with the orchestra are pianists Vladimir Horowitz, Horacio Gutierrez, violinists Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler, organists Alexander Frey, and many more. SFS has earned many Emmy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Peabody Awards.
