About Steely Dan

Steely dan is an American rock band. Initially, the band had a consistent lineup. However, in 1974, two members retired from live performances to become a studio-only band, electing to record with a changing cast of session players. "the quintessential musical antiheroes for the seventies," Rolling Stone proclaimed of them. While attending Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, Becker and Fagen were members of multiple bands. Since rejoining in 1993, Steely Dan has toured frequently and released two albums of new material, the first of which, Two Against Nature, garnered a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Their latest album of new studio material was 2003's Everything Must Go, while the band has continued to release compilations, box sets, and live albums regularly. Fagen reluctantly continued the group after Becker's death in 2017, when he was the only official member. Since their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001, they have sold over 40 million albums worldwide. VH1's countdown of the 100 Greatest Musical Artists of All Time placed Steely Dan at 82. Rolling Stone magazine placed them at fifteen on its list of the twenty best duos.
