The String Cheese Incident (SCI) is an American improvisational band from Telluride and Crested Butte, Colorado, formed in 1993. The band consists of Michael Travis on drums and percussion, Bill Nershi on acoustic, lap steel, and electric slide guitar, Kyle Hollingsworth on piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion, Keith Moseley on bass guitar, and Jason Hann on auxiliary percussion since 2004. Michael Kang plays acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin. The band's sound incorporates bluegrass, country, psychedelic, reggae, progressive rock, jazz, Latin, and electronica. They all contribute musically and lyrically. Following a few years of performing at private parties and ski resorts, the band founded their record label, SCI Fidelity. It published its debut album, Born on the Wrong Planet, featuring original music and cover versions of songs. The music on the CD was improvised and focused on melodies. Even after releasing 2017's "Believe" album, The String Cheese Incident kept touring. The improvisatory duet Snakes & Stars was formed in 2022 by Michael Travis and Aaron Johnston, who had previously performed in Brazilian Girls and David Byrne's American Utopia.
