The Milk Carton Kids are an American indie-folk duo that originated from Los Angeles, California, playing folk and Americana music. The Milk Carton Kids consists of singers and guitarists Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale. The two began making music in 2011 when Ryan attended a solo performance by Pattengale. The Milk Carton Kids released Retrospect, a live album in March 2011. The duo then performed at SXSW in March 2011, after which they joined Joe Purdy’s North American tour to work as the backing band and opening act.
