About UCLA Bruins Softball

The University of California, Los Angeles fields a Division I softball team called the Bruins. The UCLA softball team is one of the most successful in NCAA history, holding the records for most NCAA titles (12), most Women's College World Series titles (13), most NCAA Tournament victories (187), and most NCAA Tournament appearances (22). At the time of the program's inception in 1975, senior assistant athletic director Judith Holland at UCLA appointed Sharon Backus as a part-time coach. Backus's first three seasons with the Bruins were rough. UCLA had a 44-20 record between 1975 and 1977. At city parks in its early years, the Bruins were "often bumped from fields by recreational softball leagues." Backus relocated her squad to the UCLA intramural field, but the club did not receive its turf until 1980. The Bruins played their home games at Sunset Field, which opened in 1979 and remained in use until 1993. Kelly Inouye-Perez has led the UCLA Bruins since 2007 and is the current head coach. When Sue Enquist was their coach, she was a catcher for UCLA's team. In her first year of eligibility, she made First Team All-PAC-10; the next year, she made Second Team All-PAC-10. Before undergoing shoulder surgery in 1991, she led the Bruins to the National Championship in 1989 and 1990.
