Big 12 Mens Basketball Tournament Information
The Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament is the championship tournament for men’s basketball. It started in 1997 and is a single-elimination tournament consisting of four rounds. The tournament is played under the Big 12 Conference. The winner of the tournament receives the official conference championship. Also, the winner receives the Big 12 Conference automatic bid to the NCAA Championship tournament.
It is held every single year since 1997. Until 2003, the tournament was held in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri (then in 2005). The tournament was held at the American Airline Center in Dallas, Texas, in 2003, 2004, and 2006. In 2007, the tournament took place at the Ford Center at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Later, in 2008, the tournament decided to be played once again in Kansas City, but this time the venue was changed to Sprint Center. Oklahoma City hosted the 2009 edition of the tournament.
In 2010, the tournament returned to Kansas City with further notice of future tournaments will be played at the same venue till 2020. It has been extended to 2024 as per the announcement by management on October 24, 2018. Kansas has the honor of winning the most of Big 12 postseason titles. While appearing in 14 championship games, Kansas City has won 11 out of 23 times.
ESPN is the official television partner of Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Currently, they have ten teams with Kansas Jayhawks with the leading victories. The current champion of the tournament is Iowa State Cyclones.
