From 1952 to 1990, the original Komets team was a part of the International Hockey League's prior incarnation. After that, in 1990, the original IHL team became known as the Albany Choppers after relocating to Albany, New York. The Komets connected with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League for the 2014–15 season, which allowed them to play in the same arena as the Avalanche's American Hockey League club, the Lake Erie Monsters.
