The Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, now known as the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, is the world's longest-running livestock exposition and rodeo. Since 1896, it has occurred every year in Fort Worth, Texas, usually between the middle of January and the beginning of February. The Stock Show is a non-profit organization that has awarded millions of dollars in grants and scholarships to agriculture and livestock management students.
Shortly after the Civil War, Fort Worth earned the moniker "Cowtown" from the cowboys stopping there for supplies while herding cattle from South Texas to the Chisholm Trail. The town's business community responded to the Texas and Pacific Railway entrance in 1876 by building stockyards, signaling its intention to expand its role in the cattle trade. The Fort Worth Stockyards became a legal entity in 1883.
When the first side-release chutes for bucking horses and bulls were introduced at the 1927 Stock Show, they quickly became the norm for the sport. When the gate opens, the animal and rider can enter the arena from the side, improving traditional front-gate chutes. It has been said that the chute is the safest way to safeguard both the cowboy and the animal.
