Indy 500 Information

The Indy 500, or Indianapolis 500, is an annual automobile race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) in Speedway, Indiana. The race is contested as part of the IndyCar Series. Ray Harroun won the inaugural race in 1911. As such, in 2011, the event celebrated its 100th anniversary. The event's track is rounded-rectangle, having almost four distinct turns of identical dimensions and four straightaways connecting the turns.

The Indy 500 race has been explicitly organized on Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend since 1974. The Memorial Day Weekend Sunday is considered the most important day on the motorsports calendar. The fields consist of 33 starters traditionally.

Indy 500 is recognized as the top level of American Championship Car racing. It is an open-wheel open-cockpit formula. The event is billed The Greatest Spectacle in Racing, which is considered part of the Triple Crown of Motorsport. It also comprises three motorsport events that are regarded as the most prestigious.

The most successful Indy 500 winners so far are Rick Mears, Al Unser Sr., and A. J. Foyt, all of whom have won the race four times each.
