About IndyCar Series

The IndyCar Series, formerly the NTT IndyCar Series, is the pinnacle of regional open-wheel racing in North America. It has been running since 1920 under the auspices of several sanctioning organizations following failures in 1905 and 1916. The series is sanctioned by its parent corporation, INDYCAR, LLC. It was founded in 1996 by Tony George, then-owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, as the Indy Racing League (IRL) to compete with Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART). The Indy Racing League was the series' official name from 1996 to 1997. The Pep Boys Indy Racing League was the name under which the series ran during the 1998–1999 season when it secured its first title sponsor. After selling its branding rights to Internet search engine Northern Light in 2000, the competition became the Indy Racing Northern Light competition. Midway through 2010 and 2018, Sunoco was officially named the series' fuel. The announcement was made in May of that year. As a benchmark for road car relevance, the ethanol fuel blend percentage was lowered to 85% for the 2012 season. Speedway LLC became the series' official fuel supplier in 2019, while E85 was used until 2022. Shell USA, the North American business of Shell plc, began supplying fuel 100% derived from ethanol in 2023, marking the first time since 2011. The Indianapolis 500 began awarding double points for all finishing places in 2014 and continued until 2022. Starting in 2023, drivers no longer got double points but earned them as they would in any other race.
