The Masters Tournament is referred to as only The Masters. It is one of the major championships in professional golf. The tournament is scheduled for the first full week of April. It is also considered as one of the first majors of the year. The Masters does not change its location; in fact, it is always held at the same place; at Augusta National Golf Club. It is a private course located in the southeastern United States, in Augusta, Georgia. The tournament began on March 22, 1934.
The Masters Tournament began with amateur champion Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, who was an investment banker. Jones acquired the plant nursery and redesigned it into the Augusta National. Alister Mackenzie designed the course architect.
The Masters Tournament has been through many different traditions. A green jacket has been awarded to the champion of the tournament since 1949. The coat must have to be returned to the club after one year of victory. Horton Smith won the very first tournament. He was rewarded with a surprise of $1,500.
Champions, who have won the Masters Tournament, are Gene Sarazen (1935 – United States), Horton Smith (once again in 1936 after winning the very first tournament), Henry Picard (1938), Jimmy Demaret (1940), Craig Wood (1941), Byron Nelson (first in 1937 then again 1942), and many more. All these winners belonged to the United States.
A few international players from other countries who have also won the tournament include Gary Player (1961 – South Africa), Steve Ballesteros (1980 – Spain), Bernhard Langer (1985 – West Germany), Sandy Lyle (1988 – Scotland), Ian Woosnam (1991 – Wales), and a few others.
