The Miami Open is a tennis tournament that is held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The tournament is part of the ATP Tours Masters 1000 circuit of men. From 1987-2018, Miami Open was historically held at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, Florida. In 2019, the tournament shifted to Miami Gardens. The competition keeps the record of 300,000 visitors’ attendance. This helped the tennis tournament to become one of the largest tournaments outside the four Grand Slams. The tournament broke its record in 2011 when 316,267 visitors attended the Miami Open tournament.
The Miami Open was officially founded by the former player Butch Buchholz. He was the executive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Buchholz initiated the event with the aim behind, to make it the major event of the year. The first tournament of Miami Open took place in February 1985, at Laver’s International Tennis Resort, located in Delray Beach, Florida. In 1986, Miami Open relocated to its new location, Boca West.
The Miami Open has been upgraded by the time, and in 2006, the tournament became the first event in the United States to use Hawk-Eye that allowed players to challenge close line calls. The very first challenge was made by Jamea Jackson in a game against Ashley Harkleroad.
Players who have won the Miami Open more than once in their career are Roger Federer (Switzerland), Andre Agassi (United States), Novak Djokovic (Serbia), Andy Murray (Scotland), along with many others.
