About Penn State Nittany Lions Mens Hockey

Penn State University's men's ice hockey team is the Penn State Nittany Lions, once known as the Penn State Icers. They represent Penn State University in collegiate ice hockey competitions. As a club sport, the program competed in ACHA Division I before the 2012–13 season.  After only two games in 1909 and 1910, Penn State's ice hockey program officially began in 1938. Penn State had a varsity hockey team from 1940–1944 and 1946–1947, but they had to eliminate the sport because of space constraints. In the 2011–12 season, PSU played as an independent ACHA D-I member before making a significant leap to the NCAA D-I level. This transition marked a new chapter in the club's history, showcasing its growth and potential. Before that, the club was a member of the Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League (ESCHL). Their home rink is University Park, Pennsylvania's Pegula Ice Arena. Following years of rumors, the program's official announcement came on September 17, 2010. Beginning with the 2012–13 season, it will become part of the PSU women's ice hockey team in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. The program will compete as an independent team until the new arena is finished in 2013. The 2017 Big Ten Tournament was a historic moment for Penn State, marking their inaugural win as they defeated Wisconsin. The 2017 tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award went to freshman goalkeeper Peyton Jones, a testament to the team's talent and hard work. Jones, along with forward Liam Folkes, defenseman Vince Pedrie, and forward Erik Autio, were the four Nittany Lions named to the All-Tournament Team, a proud moment for the entire team.
