Pittsburgh Pirates Information
The Pittsburgh Pirates, formerly known as Pittsburgh Alleghenys, are a professional American baseball team based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The other nicknames of the team are The Buccos, The Bucs, and The Black and Gold. They are a member of the National League Central division and play in Major League Baseball with the same title. Previously, the team played its home games at Three Rivers Stadium and Forbes Field, but the current home venue is PNC Park.
The franchise was founded on October 15, 1881. The Pirates have an overall record of 10,476–10,312 (.504) from 1882 to 2018. They turned the first 3-4-2 triple play in Major League history on May 8, 1886. It is the first franchise to win a World Series on a home run (1960 World Series) in the 7th game.
In 1887, the franchise joined the NL & was competitive from its early years, playing in the inaugural World Series in 1903, winning three NL titles from 1901 to 1903, and winning its first World Series 1909. Since its formation, the franchise has won five World Series championships in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971, and 1979. It has also won 9 East Division titles, 9 NL Pennants, and none of the Central Division titles.
Pittsburgh Pirates are famous for their black, gold, and white uniforms. Since 1979, the Pirate Parrot has been the popular costumed mascot of the team. He entertains the fans by leading cheers and interacting with fans. Some of the team’s well-known Hall Of Famers inductees are Jake Beckley, Hank Greenberg, George Kelly, Willie Stargell, Lloyd Waner, Vic Willis, and Goose Gossage.
Several team players have won Most Valuable Player Award, including Roberto Clemente, Andrew McCutchen, Dave Parker, Barry Bonds, Paul Waner, Willie Stargell, and Dick Groat. Pittsburgh Pirates have also won many trophies throughout the years, including the 1971 Warren C. Giles Trophy, 1971 World Series Trophy, 1979 Warren C. Giles Trophy, and Baseball America Organization of the Year Trophy.
