About Sentry Tournament of Champions

The Sentry, held annually in Maui, Hawaii, is the first tournament of the PGA Tour season. Originally limited to circuit winners from the previous calendar year, the event expanded its eligibility criteria 1953 to include players who qualified for the circuit Championship the year before. The PGA Tour began its current wrap-around season in the fall of 2013 after using the same tournament to kick off each season from 1986 through 2013. Cameron Smith won the 2022 tournament, posting the lowest 72-hole to-par score in PGA Tour history (34). Played yearly on the Plantation Course at the Kapalua Resort in Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui, the Sentry has been an annual event since 1999. It takes place in the first week of January. It is a par-73 course, which is not typical of PGA Tour tournaments. The PGA Tour has announced that the field for the 2021 tournament will be enlarged to include not only the champions of the 2020 calendar year's tournaments but also the 30 players who qualified for the 2020 Tour Championship.  After eleven tournaments were canceled because of the pandemic, the decision was taken to adjust. Once again, the field was limited to the winners in 2022, but in 2023, the inclusion of Tour Championship qualifiers was made permanent. Consequently, the event rebranded for 2024, once again removing the long-standing Event of Champions moniker.
