The University of Massachusetts Minutemen football team competes in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Massachusetts is the fourth-oldest program in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Minutemen are an FBS independent team. The Minutemen's first home field was Alumni Field, located on the south side of campus. In 1915, a new stadium, also known as Alumni Field, was built to replace this one. Alumni Stadium took its place in 1965, and the Whitmore Administration Building was built there afterward. Since its inception in 1879, UMass has competed in three FCS National Championship games, winning the title in 1998. In 2011, the Minutemen began a two-year move to the Football Bowl Subdivision, becoming bowl eligible in 2013. The Mid-American Conference and UMass reached an agreement in March 2014 for the Minutemen to leave the conference after the 2015 season after UMass turned down an opportunity to join as a full member. Following that, the Minutemen played as an independent for the remainder of the 2019 season. The program's 12-game schedules are fixed through the 2022 season, 10 of 12 games are fixed for 2023 and 2024, and at least three games per season are fixed out to 2028 as of late December 2019. On November 22, 2021, UMass selected Don Brown as their next head football coach. He will be the Minutemen's head coach for the second time.
