US Open Golf Information
The US Open is formerly known as the United States Open Championship. It is the gold championship that is held every year. It is the third of the four major championships in golf. The first US Open was played on October 4, 1985. It was a 36-hole competition that was played in a single day. The entries were ten professionals and one amateur. The championship was won by the 21-year-old Englishman Horace Rawlins. The winner received $150 out of $335 prize fund and a gold medal worth $50. The tournament was dominated by experienced British players through the beginnings until 1911.
The US Open title has been won by the United States players since 1911, the most. Since 1950, players from the other six countries have won the title and the most by South Africa. 2004-2007 are the four years in which non-American players dominated the tournament for the first time after 1910. These four players include Angel Cabrera from Argentina (2007), Geoff Ogilvy from Australia (2006), Michael Campbell from New Zealand (2005), and Retief Goosen from South Africa (2004). Graeme McDowell became the first European to win since 1970 when the last time Tony Jacklin of England had won the title last time.
Any professional whose USGA Handicap Index is not exceeded to more than 1.4 is qualified to play the US Open championship. Players who have been the tournament’s finalists and winning it are Payne Stewart of United States (1999), Ernie Els of South Africa (1994-1997), Willie Macfarlane of Scotland (1925), along with several other players who have won the title from different corners of the world.
