Vanderbilt Commodores Mens Basketball Information
Vanderbilt University fields a men's basketball team that competes in the Southeastern Conference as the Commodores (SEC). Memorial Gym is where the Commodores host their home games. In the early 1950s, construction began on what would become known as Memorial Gym. A plaque honoring the lives lost by students and graduates during World War II is on display in the north lobby of the gymnasium.
When the gym was being built, there was a debate on campus regarding if Vanderbilt should put less emphasis on athletics in favor of academics. The gymnasium was designed to contain 9,000 spectators to compromise an expanded athletics competition and those who fought for de-emphasis. It would be easily adaptable to other uses, most prominently as a possible concert hall.
As a result, the gymnasium floor was elevated, giving it the appearance of a stage rather than a playing surface. There have been 15 times that the Commodores have competed in the NCAA Tournament. They have a combined record of 10-16 so far. Thirteen times, the Commodores have qualified for the NIT. They have a combined record of 22 wins and 12 losses. In 1990, they won the NIT.
