Based on real events, the show follows John Adams as he tries to get his fellow senators to sign the Declaration of Independence and vote in favor of American independence. After its 1969 Broadway premiere, the musical won three Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Actors William Daniels, Ken Howard, and Howard Da Silva were in the original cast, which included Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Adams. It was adapted into a film in 1972. The show has been revived several times in New York: in 1997 on Broadway and in 2016 at Encores! concert, and in 2022 on Broadway with an all-female, trans, and non-binary cast. A portion of the "Remember the Ladies" statement, which advocates for women's rights, from a letter written by Abigail Adams to John Adams in March 1776, was performed in the 2022 revival. A.R.T. announced in April 2022 that the revival cast would be female, non-binary, and trans and that the production transferred to Roundabout's American Airlines Theatre on September 16, 2022, where, after previews, it opened on October 6, 2022, ran until January 8, 2023, and began a 16-city national tour in February.
