Mamma Mia! Information
The British playwright Catherine Johnson penned the musical Mamma Mia! (marketed as Benny Andersson & Björn Ulvaeus' Mamma Mia!) based on the music of the Swedish pop group ABBA, specifically the songs of Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The group's 1975 number-one hit "Mamma Mia" inspired the musical's title. As of 2020, the show has been produced in numerous international countries, and it is also the sixth longest-running show in the history of London's West End.
A French-language remake, also from Quebec and produced by Just For Laughs, ran in Montreal in June, July, and December at the Théâtre Saint-Denis before moving to Quebec City's Salle Albert-Rousseau in August 2019. Throughout its short run, the play sold over 75,000 tickets. On March 10, 2023, a brand-new Mexican revival production premiered at Mexico City's Teatro Insurgentes.
As of May 2023, "Mamma Mia - Ce Spetacul," an adaptation of the musical with Friulian settings and many dialogues and jokes in Friulian, had been performed seven times by the Merybi theater company of Gemona del Friuli (Udine, Italy).
